Die Drie Herberge
Handelinge 28:15 “En die broeders wat van ons lotgevalle gehoor het, het ons daarvandaan tegemoetgekom tot by die Appius-mark en die Drie Herberge; en toe Paulus hulle sien, het hy God gedank en moed gevat.”
Dit is ‘n vreugdevolle oomblik verewig vasgevang in die woorde van Lukas, skrywer van “Die Handelinge van die Heilige Apostels”. Wat die oomblik so spesiaal maak vir Paulus, is dat dit plaasvind aan die einde van ‘n lang en moeilike stryd teen die een ding na die ander.
Hier is ‘n samevatting wat Paulus en sy reisgenote moes deurgaan.
Eerstens, ‘n groep van godsdienstige fanatici het Paulus bestorm en beplan om hom te stenig in Jerusalem. (Hand 23:12-15) Omdat hy beide Jood en Romeinse burger was het Paulus ‘n pleidooi tot ‘n Romeinse tronkbewaarder gerig wat hom in ‘n tronk bewaar het. (Hand 23:27) Vandaar het hy voor Felix verskyn, is aangestuur na Festus, wat hom verder teen die gesagslyn opgestuur het na Agríppa; wat hom aan boord van ‘n skip, onderweg na Rome, geplaas het om voor die Keiser te verskyn. (Hand 24 – 26)
Die skip, ten spyte van Paulus se waarskuwings aan die kaptein, is vasgevang in ‘n erge storm ter see; ‘n storm so erg dat alle hoop op redding verloor is. Die skip het gestrand en opgebreek en almal het behoue aan land gekom. Daar is Paulus is deur ‘n giftige slag gebyt, wat hy in die vuur afgeskud het, en het oorleef. (Hand 27 – 28:10)
Uiteindelik het hulle die kuslyn van Italië bereik en was hulle op pad na Rome, die een stad wat Paulus vele kere probeer besoek het maar is telkens, in sy eie woorde, verhoed deur Satan. En nou was hy op pad, ‘n gevangene in kettings.
Dit is hier waar die verrassende gebeurtenis afspeel.
Gelowiges in Rome het op een of ander manier te hore gekom dat Paulus op pad was, het vyftig myl uit Rome gereis om hom nie net te ontmoet by die Drie Herberge nie maar hom ook na Rome te vergesel, asof hy ‘n besoekende hooggeplaaste was.
Toe Paulus hulle sien was hy bemoedig en het moed geskep. Sy gees het opgestaan en is versterk.
My vriend / vriendin, as jou pad ook besaai is met terugslae en ontberings, en jy in getrouheid aan Jesus voortgaan en aanhou; hou moed! Die Drie Herberge is nog voor waar broers en susters jou sal inwag, jou gees sal versterk en jy die Here sal loof en prys.
“Here Jesus. My pad tot nou is ook besaai met sukkel en moeilkihede. Ek kies om in getrouheid aan U voort te gaan. Dankie dat ek weet dat my Drie Herberge voor my is, daar waar ek ook ingewag en versterk sal word om verder te gaan. Amen.”
The Three Taverns
Acts 28:15 “And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.”
This is a delightful moment captured forever in the words of Luke, author of The Acts. What makes this moment so special was that, for Paul, it came at the end a long and arduous struggle against one thing after another.
Here’s a recap of what Paul and his fellow travellers had encountered.
First, a mob of religious fanatics rushed upon Paul intending to stone him to death in Jerusalem. (Act 23:12-15) Being both a Jew and a Roman citizen, Paul appealed to a Roman jailer who secured him in the local prison. (Act 23:27) From there he appeared before Felix, was sent to Festus, who then passed him up the food chain to Agrippa; who then put him on a ship headed for Rome to appear before Caesar. (Act 24 – 26)
The ship, despite Paul’s warnings to the Captain, got caught in a horrific storm at sea; a storm of such force that all hope of their being saved was lost. Breaking apart upon a reef, they were able to make it to land, where Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake, but miraculously survived. (Act 27 – 28:10)
Finally they reached the shores of Italy and headed towards Rome, the one city Paul had tried to visit so many times before, but was, in his words, “hindered by Satan” from doing so. And now he is on his way; as a prisoner in chains.
That’s when this happy scene unfolds.
Believers in Rome had somehow heard that Paul was enroute, and traveled almost fifty miles out of Rome to not only meet him on the way at a place called The Three Taverns, but to escort him into Rome as if he were a visiting dignitary.
When Paul saw them, he thanked God and was encouraged. One translation says, “his spirits rose.”
My friend, if the road you travel is beset with one blow after the other, and yet you are pressing on in faithfulness to the Lord; take heart. The Three Taverns is yet ahead, and a band of brothers will greet you there, lifting your spirits and filling your heart with praise!
“Lord Jesus. My journey is also strewn with suffering and trouble. I choose to press on in faithfulness to You. Thank you that I know that my Three Taverns are ahead where I will be received and strengthened for the journey ahead. Amen.”
